Hârn

Building off our recent episode on Chivalry & Sorcery, this week we look at another realistic medieval RPG world, N. Robin Crossby’s Hârn. Unlike C&S, though, Hârn was originally created as a system agnostic setting. That’d change later, with the HârnMaster system, but with or without the rules, the Hârn remains one of the the most ambitious and stunningly detailed ever created. Let’s take a look around, eh?

  1. The Harn Magic system reminds me of nothing so much as ARS MAGICA which was roughly contemporaneous with HARNMASTER MAGIC.. The Order of Hermes and the Shek Pavar are kissing cousins too. (Have you done ARS MAGICA yet? If not why not?)

My problems with Harn involve some of the odd lacaunae in the world. There’s no list of names for each culture. Where did Crosby pull the names out of? How do you name somoneone?

And the clan system is deeply important on the Misty Isle. Is it explained anywhere? No it bloody isn’t. Mutter.
