Holy crap, would you look at this thing? I did not expect Magic Realms to instantly become one of my favorite art books ever made. Dice Men, the history of the early days of Games Workshop that preceded this, was nice and a repository of material I'd have never seen otherwise, but it was also, uh, a bit of self-congratulatory propaganda? Which is fine, really. But I was sort of expecting the same thing here, a glossy reflection on the good ol' days with the greatest hits of the art. But no, this is about the most down-to-business games art book I have ever encountered. It just dumps something that feels close to the entire body of illustrative work from the Fighting Fantasy series in you lap (it isn't everything but it still comes off as definitive). It's arranged by artist, with a short essay for each providing some context. But the text is light and the art is astounding and plentiful.
If you're a Fighting Fantasy fan, get this. If you're not a Fighting Fantasy fan, get this. |
