I love Les Edwards. He's probably most famous for the cover art of the original HeroQuest, which, what a painting. But my fixated on his work began via the color plates included in the fourth edition Call of Cthulhu rulebook, which were decidedly more horror-focused and representative of his larger body of work - Mr. Shiny, ghouls, the Croglin vampire.
I'm always on the hunt for more Les and the grail has always been Blood & Iron (1989), one of two art books produced by Games Workshop in the '80s glory days. They both go for absurd amounts of money, usually (I've never seen the Ian Miller/John Blanche jam Ratspike list for less than $300, and this is usually comfortably above $150), but I happened upon this one for a mere $50, including the shipping cost from the UK! It took close to a month to get here and...it smells...funny. You'd think that would add to the charm, but no, this guy need to sit in the sun for a while, I think. Still, worth the wait. You better believe this is going to get a post on the site in 2025.
If any of youse have a line on Edwards' illustrated edition of M.R. James' collected ghost stories, hit me up! |
