The photo above is a promo image from the early '90s, depicting the Goblin War Giant, produced by Grenadier Models and sculpted by Nick Lund. This photo was in many a Dragon Magazine during the period that it was my primary window into the world of tabletop, and this model became fixed in my mind as the very height of the miniature-maker's art. And, I mean, with good reason, it's a frickin' gigantic giant carrying 10 frickin' gobbos into battle! Holy wow.
So, uh, I felt up to the challenge the other day and I bought one. I found one on eBay in the earlier '80s-era box (this photo is connected to Grenadier's Fantasy Warriors wargame line, but the sculpt had been kicking around a while before that came out) and it was cheaper than the modern casts from Mirliton (I've had not great luck with Mirliton models fitting together properly, and I'd read that vintage casts of this guy are extremely forgiving in terms of assembly, which seems to have been accurate). It is...a lot of miniature. Which, it is a model. Miniature is an inadequate word for 3.5 pounds of white metal in 30 pieces.
Anyway, I suspect you are going to be seeing a lot of this doink in the coming months as I struggle to put him together and re-paint him. But I had to share one particular thing. If you look at that photo up top, you can see the goblin commander sitting under the yellow standard. I always assumed he was sitting on wood planks, but it turns out that, no, he's sitting directly on the giant's head, like Ratatouille. Incredible. |
