When Val Kilmer passed, the topic of Willow (1988) inevitably came up. I liked the movie in 1988, and I liked the tie-in videogame even more (if this were court testimony, the opposing counsel would object, citing the irrelevence of the videogame to the topic at hand, while my lawyer would argue that it goes to state of mind). I didn't enjoy the movie very much when I rewatched it about ten years ago. There are good moments and designs and such, but overall I find the pace slow and the direction workmanlike. Maybe I'll enjoy it if I watch it again? Who knows. I bet the kid will like it.
Anyway, I'm not going to play through the videogame again, but I did find myself getting surprisingly nostalgic for the line of not-very-exciting Willow toys from Tonka. They're PVC sculpts mounted on little metal plates, similar to (though bigger than) Britains' line of knights. I had General Kael, the Troll (only briefly, though, because he vanished into the hinge of the back seat of the car and was never fished out) and the extremely cool Nockmaar Lieutenant (left). No heroes, because that's how I rolled as a kid. Now I have like, all of the unmounted ones, except Bavmorda. Thank eBay. What the heck am I gonna do with these? |
