I haven't had the time required to really sit down and write chapters for the monster book the last two weeks, so I've been fiddling about with some stuff for the next book project, the one on D&D toys and their knock-offs. Mainly, that's consisted of trying to figure out the best way to get in touch with Steve Bissette, but I also found a couple fantasy toy sets at remarkably low prices that deserve coverage in the field guide. One arrived literally as I sat down to put together this newsletter: an unopened, mint condition Warriors of the Galaxy set from Marty Toy (1983). It's the electronic version, even! (I posted about some of the demons from this set last year.)
I'd have gone entirely nutso for this as a kid. In fact, I have to make sure I get it in the club house before my kid gets home and tries to claim it as his own. What a glorious thing, a clear knock-off of Masters of the Universe that fits perfectly in the fantasy toy resurgence going on at the time. I am endlessly amused by box copy like "Plus 2 Plastic Hills." What a treasure. |
