]]> Sword & Sorcery is a 1982 toy set from H. G. Toys. There were three different sizes, this is the middle-sized one that came with a snap-together plastic castle and vinyl play mat (the smaller set had less figures and no mat, the bigger set had more figures, a big cardboard mountain fortress and a different mat). The soldiers are a bit unexciting — the silvers look modeled after Norman knights, the gold are Vikings and seem to anticipate the brown plastic Viking from Crossbows & Catapults. The knights have cavalry and a pretty cool snake-themed wizard on their side. There is also siege equipment that I feel could have inspired C&C — catapults, arrow shields and ladders.

The real star of the set, though, is the three-headed red dragon, which is probably the finest plastic monster of the type for the era. It’s a neat design and feels substantial when you pick it up. And, you know, it’s got three heads. And if you think it looks a bit like King Ghidorah, well, there’s a good reason for that. This is Tricephalon, the monster villain for H.G. Toys’ Godzilla play set (1978). Clearly a low-rent Ghidorah.
