Perilous Forest (1992)

I’m including Perilous Forest mainly for the cover, because the devil on horseback is always a good idea to include in your Instagram feed.

As a book, kind of meh. It has the usual Chaosium eye for detail, giving lots of information on a number of locations around Cumbria and near Hadrian’s Wall. Several interesting short adventures that go to lengths to incorporate famous medieval legends, but they seem of dubious value. The best involves the Lambton Worm, but if you’re playing Pendragon, you probably know the story of the Lambton Worm, so the solution isn’t exactly a surprise. Still, it was an excuse to get a pretty great illustration of the famous worm and the armor that was its undoing (spiked armor will never not be cool).

The biggest problem for Perilous Forest (and many other Pendragon supplements, and probably Chaosium’s bottom line) is that the campaign is rooted in southern England and Wales, which means the characters simply won’t have much time to explore the northern wilds. Worse, Chaosium bothered about putting this out and never actually finished the damn campaign! But I’m getting ahead of myself…
