Blood Brothers (1990)

I don’t honestly think Call of Cthulhu’s Lovecraftian horror is generally a good fit for Halloween – CoC scenarios inevitably lead to a bleak, cosmic conclusion that seems at odds with the more intimate and light hearted scares of October. Blood Brothers is an answer for that.

We’ve got 13 short scenarios here, all designed to fit into a single night of play, most with pre-generated characters, all lacking connections to the Cthulhu Mythos. In fact, the unifying theme is horror B-movies. Thus, the haunted house scenario “Uncle Timothy’s Will” takes its cues from movies like House on Haunted Hill and Kwaidan while “Ancient Midget Nazi Shamans” is more in line with the Gremlins, Ghoulies and Critters franchises.

Nearly all of the scenarios are solid and maintain a good mix of laughs and scares (one exception: “Spawn of the Deep” tackles pregnancy horror in a manner some players may likely find distasteful). The best part? In the introduction, the writers provide stats for Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, stars of the greatest horror comedy of all time, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Definitely check that out if you find yourself in need of a spooky movie this month…
