For the rest of the week, we’re going to ween off the month-long Halloween vibe with some less the stellar Call of Cthulhu licensed books. First up is the best of them, Lurking Fears, from Triad Entertainments (a company name that seems more apt for a producer of VHS B-movies rather than RPG supplements).

I love everything about this book. Obviously a fan-made product, it emulates many aspects of Chaosium publications, but in ways that fall just slightly short. The art is passable and strangely cartoony, which makes some of the grislier illustrations more disturbing. None of the scenarios feel play-tested, most lack thought out investigative sections and all have too many powerful monsters. Honestly, there is probably not a whole lot of difference between these scenarios and ones that you and I have tucked in some notebook or another. The main difference, honestly, is that these guys published a book of them. More power to them!
