GURPS Fantasy (1986)

This is the first edition Fantasy sourcebook for GURPS, from 1986.

I’ve never seen a first edition GURPS basic set, but I assume like the third edition, it has a basic magic system. Fantasy introduces a much more robust magic system and details a generic fantasy world called Yrth. Later, the magic section became GURPS Magic and GURPS Fantasy was a sourcebook first devoted solely to Yrth then devoted to the fantasy genre in general.

This is my favorite of the four because come on, look at that cover! Steve Jackson was like, “You want a Satanic Panic? I got your Satanic Panic right here!” The back cover design is pretty sweet, too. Big fan of hexagons.

This book is also a great example of GURPS’ biggest failing. While most of the covers are great, the interior art is…well, generic at best. The rules are the focus, so even the good art is small and inconsequential. And a lot of it in later books is just plain bad, as we’ll see later this week…
