The Fungi from Yuggoth (1984) is an odd one. It was written by Keith Herber, who’d go on to do great things with the Lovecraft Country series, but this is his first outing and, well, its a mixed bag. It consists of another world-spanning occult conspiracy in which players are guided to locations by the premonitory dreams of a psychic, which is cool. The first couple scenarios are solid, but things wobble in the middle and it all goes off the rails by the end.

To make matters worse, the antagonist is the Dark Brotherhood, which is a cult dedicated to Nyarlathotep, the stakes are the end of the world and the climax takes place in front of the sphinx in Giza, Egypt. Being that they both came out in the same year, this makes it real hard to not compare Fungi to Masks of Nyarlathotep. Seeing as how Masks raised the bar for the period, Fungi comes out looking like a mess.
