I’ve been following Skullfungus’ work for several years now and I just love all of it. He’s a staple in OSR zines, and I get lots of cool digital dungeons via his Patreon, but man, his work deserves paper and bindings. And thus, we have Isle of Ixx (2022), what I am pretty sure is the very first Skullfungus book!

Like most stuff put out by Games Omnivorous, Ixx is pretty minimalist. There is a modified version of Into the Odd packed in the front of the book, itself a minimalist system, but you can really use any system, minimal or otherwise. The rest of the book is dedicated to primarily to hexcrawling a strange tropical island. There’s an eternal storm and dinosaurs and mutants and a little town of shipwreck survivors. Small adventures are strewn across the island, along with a few small dungeons. Most contribute in some way to a larger mystery of the isle that I won’t divulge. All of it is accompanied by maps and illustrations in Skullfungus’ trademark thick black ink, include a largely blank map for players to fill in — y’all know how much I love a blank map.
Short, sweet, verging on perfect.
