Denizens of Og (1993)

Denizens of Og (1993) has my favorite cover, I think, of the Monstrous Compendium-style books for the Demons line of Role Aids. This is Mike Nystul’s third and final volume of demons. Like a Tootsie Pop, three is how many demon compendiums it takes to get to Nystul’s Tootsie Roll center, or something. Cover art here is Daniel Gelon, interiors are all Tom Sutton. There is no creepy dedication in this one.

The demi-plane of Og is preoccupied with matters of the soul and its corruption. This is sort of what I was getting at yesterday — I don’t see that translating to the physical forms of these demons in any kind of unifying way and I kind of feel like I should? And while the variety is still high, some of the demons are becoming a bit more preposterous. How do Culdra do anything, let alone carry out the various duties of generals, with birds constantly pecking out her eyes? Also interesting: one of the generals, Vulgatt, is frozen in a block of ice, a trait shared with Levistus, the substitute lord of D&D’s fifth level of hell, revealed later in the ’90s in Planescape (after TSR bought out the Role Aids line from Mayfair).
