Runecairn Bestiary (2023)

Runecairn Bestiary (2023) is, well, a bestiary. I love those! It collects many creatures from Norse mythology, but also introduces many of the horrors that have leaked into the world in the wake of Ragnarok. There are a lot of cool monsters, mostly coming from the latter camp, but I need to call out the Muspelhounds (fire dogs) as the best named beastie in the book. Get it? Hounds, but from Muspelheim?

As with the core book, there is a pool of artists here. Goran Gligovic delivers a fantastic draugr for the front cover, Brandon Yu has a terrifying snake man on the back. The majority of the interiors I’ve fixated on are by Kim Diaz Holm and Felipe da Silva Faria.

I would be remiss if I didn’t point out how great Le Sueur’s layout is. This book is crisp and clean, the attribute blocks quick to reference and full of small details that are helpful for running the beasts. The oxblood frame matches the monster section in the Wardensaga book, which is a nice touch — that book features color borders for section reference, the colors of which correspond, more or less, with tomorrow’s book as well! That’s good global design that makes it easier for me to work with Le Sueur’s books, even if I’m running different games.
