The Monsters Color-the-Creature Book (1974)

Look at this beautiful beast. It is hard to appreciate in a photo, but The Monsters Color-the-Creature Book (1974), by Bernie Wrightson, measures at a glorious 11×17 inches. There are fifteen monsters — vampire, glob, ghoul, mummy, werewolf, alien, cyclops, Frankenstein’s monster, carnivorous plant, hoodoo zombie, goblins, creeping dead, ax murderer, witch and swamp creature — each accompanied by a silly poem.

I think I like the alien and the cyclops the best, just because they are somewhat outside my expectations of Bernie’s subject matter. On the other hand, the werewolves, glob and creeping dead are probably some of Bernie’s best takes on some of his staple creatures. Fantastic line work, confident use of negative space. So nice to see them so large, too.
