Earlier this year, we checked out Cloudland, Grenadier Models’ generic fantasy adventure module. This is the miniature company’s lone Call of Cthulhu module, The Horrible Secret of Monhegan Island (1984), designed expressly for use with Grenadier’s line of Call of Cthulhu miniatures (ad conveniently located on the last page).

There are two scenarios. The title jam involves a sparsely populated island in league with the deep ones, a la “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.” The humans perform rituals and the deep ones provide the islanders with good fishing. But in recent years, the ritual lapsed due to deaths among the human cult leaders without the proper knowledge being passed down. The ritual is back, but using an older form that requires a sort of sacrifice and the sacrifice has attracted police attention this year. So, in a hook not unlike Grimrock Isle, the cult leader brings in the players to investigate (and they stay at his mansion!) in hopes that they will muddy the police investigation. It’s not a work of genius, but it is miles better than, say, Nightmare in Norway.
The second, shorter “The House in the Woods” really boils down to a single encounter with some fungi from Yuggoth in a secluded Maine cabin. It’s nothing special.
The book is surprisingly well-illustrated by Flint Henry and comes with lots of little battle mats for miniatures. Marin Kealey’s cover is pretty good too, but the tan skin on the deep ones admittedly makes me mistake them for ghouls.
