Greek Gods and Heroes (1985)

Greek mythology, I feel, is central entry point for Dungeons & Dragons. The ancient stories of heroes and gods form a template for what an adventure is in D&D terms. And, of course, there are the monsters. Chimerae, minotaurs, dragons, medusae, pegasi and more populate and define fantasy worlds in D&D and beyond.

The MacMillan Book of Greek Gods and Heroes, by Alice Low, was my main introduction to Greek Mythology. It is geared for children, so the stories are stripped down to their simplest (and cleanest – lots of scandalous stuff in Greek mythology) form and illustrated in beautiful water colors by Arvis Stewart. This was only the first of many books on Greek mythology I had, but it is the one I’ve hung onto. I would bet that most of you had at least one beloved book of Greek myths on your childhood shelf too…
