I5: Lost Tomb of Martek (1983)

I5: Lost Tomb of Martek rounds out the Desert of Desolation series, and our week.

The tomb is unreachable unless both I3 and I4 have been completed and it takes you to some strange places. If the previous modules focused on traps designed by the magic and cunning of man, Tomb is more concerned with the trippy hazards of extraplanar spaces. One of the scenario’s locales (probably my favorite of them) is called the Mobius Tower, which should give you some sense of what is in store.  

I like how this module plays with the cliché of prophecy and treasure hunting. The players know that an ancient prophecy says a group of heroes shall retrieve a powerful artifact from the tomb, but there is nothing intrinsic about the PCs that indicates that they are the Chosen Ones. If they succeed, they were, but if they fail, oh well, guess not. The second twist is the nature of the artifact, the almost boringly named Sphere of Power. I enjoy how the reality of the Sphere (which I shan’t reveal) almost certainly plays against the expectations of the players.
