The Great Modron March (1997)

The Great Modron March is a Planescape adventure anthology that contains a series of loosely linked scenarios based around the titular march. The Modrons, bizarre creatures of Order, march through the Outer Planes once every 300 years or so, but for mysterious reasons, this one kicks off early, causing an unprecedented amount of chaos (cosmic irony!). The scenarios in the book explore the spectrum of effects the march has on those in its path and, eventually, a larger mystery becomes apparent to the players.

The scenarios have a ton of variety, dragging players all over the planes as they follow the march, and there are plenty of unexpected situations (ever negotiate with an insane Modron judge?). Even better: the scenarios work best when interspersed with other diversions, so you don’t have to get bogged down with bizarre, unsympathetic Modrons every session.

Cover art is by Randy Post, my second favorite Planescape artist. He really nails the vibe established by DiTerlizzi while maintaining his own super-intricate style. I mean, just look at that Drow priestess. Look at her! So good. We’ve also got stuff here by Adam Rex and Ray Nadeu, which are fine but they don’t really light my fire. Consolation prize – in the corner of every page is a line drawing of a monodrone, so if you flip the pages real fast it creates a walking animation. It is delightful.
