Ogre King (1983)

Seems appropriate to talk about toys the week before Christmas, no?

This is the Ogre King, from the LJN line of Dungeons & Dragons toys line released in 1983. He’s one of my favorites from the line and he’s an excellent example of why the D&D action figure line was an 80s classic. Look at all the detail! I really dig the armor design, kind of a riff on gladiator armor. The helmet is a bit ridiculous, but again, I can’t help but love the details like the neck guard plates. And peep that evil grin. He’s a good deal taller than the standard human characters, too.

The 1984 series two issued the Ogre King as a “shield shooter” which does exactly as the name implies. Those ogres have a brighter green skin and black and orange armor – all in all too gaudy for my taste.
