GURPS CthulhuPunk (1995)

A collaboration of sorts between Steve Jackson Games and Chaosium produced CthulhuPunk in 1995. It is a blasphemous hybrid of Call of Cthulhu and cyberpunk. This is maybe peak 1995 tabletop RPG.

Again, this is further evidence not only that you can do anything with the GURPS system, but also that there is probably already a sourcebook in the world for whatever hair brained idea you have.

I find it hard to write about this book because everything I type out makes me sound slightly unhinged. Chocolate and peanut butter this is not. Not because of anything intrinsic to the sourcebook, even – its a perfectly adequate book (with pretty solid art, actually). But this just seems like an attempt to duct tape together two things that were popular and made money. I don’t understand, on a thematic level, why you would want to marry these two things together. Because they’re both nihilistic? I guess, but cyberpunk seems to be on the entirely different end of the nihilism spectrum from Lovecraft.

I can’t imagine wanting to play this. I bet someone out there has (there is a second printing leaking foulness into one of my storage boxes).
