Hook Horror (1983)

The LJN Dungeons & Dragons toy line is my favorite toy line. Partly because it is a D&D toy line, obviously. But beyond that, its just so damn strange. Every time I look through them, I discover some weird little detail. Other times, I just look at the Hook Horror and wonder, “Of all the D&D monsters, why on earth did they make a toy out of a weird eagle cockroach thing with hooks for hands?”

Don’t get me wrong, this toy is AWESOME. I love it to bits. But you have to admit, it is an odd choice (and before you jump into the comments to point out that Hook Horrors showed up in the cartoon, I know, and that is just as mind-boggling, maybe even more so).

Anyway, Hooky here is a pretty great example of the overall high quality of the line. He’s hefty, made of durable plastic with lots of detail in the sculpt (why’s he so ripped?). The little hooks are articulated, if you can believe it, so you can swivel them around. The ears are a different, softer kind of plastic, too, for some reason, but they aren’t articulated. All in all, an excellent reproduction of the Alan Hunter art from Fiend Folio and one of my faves.
