B5: Horror on the Hill (1983) was the first original Basic module to come out in support of Mentzer’s Red Box basic rules. There’s a volcano, some wilderness encounters (which is weird for a Red Box basic scenario), an abandoned monastery and a cave system. The main antagonists are a tribe of goblins and hobgoblins, though there’s a young red dragon and some owl bears and other surprises. Mostly, though, this one feels like Keep on the Borderland Lite to me. There is nothing in the module that, to my eye, justifies using the word horror in the title, either.

I do love me some hobgoblins, though, and I love how James Holloway draws their creepy eyes. Quite a bit of good art here, particularly that gelatinous cube illustration. Always down for some Jell-o.
