Now, it should surprise no-one that Larry Elmore’s cover art for the 1983 D&D Basic Rules, arguably the most iconic piece of Dungeons & Dragons, appears on a 1983 jigsaw puzzle. I can tell you from personal experience, it was quite a satisfying puzzle to put together! But one thing about it strikes me as super strange: it is 551 pieces. I’ve never come across a puzzle with an odd number of pieces like that. I admit, I was kind of hoping the whole thing would be square and the 551st piece would be a jutting protrusion at the top to complete the tip of the horn, but alas, not the case.

This one had an adorable little catalog inside, about the size of the instruction manuals that would be included with NES game cartridges in a couple years. It is a great representation of TSR’s line circa 1983/1984, including offerings from the just purchased through dastardly mean SPI. I’ve NEVER seen this sort of catalog before, but I love it. Favorite TSR catalog ever.
