Night Shift (1979)

Classic cover, classic short story collection: this is Night Shift, by Stephen King, the 1979 Signet edition. It was King’s first collection and is brimming with classics (there are plenty of clunkers, too, though even those have an unusual charm, as they display aspects of King that have since fallen away as he formalized in the years since. A lot of movies spring directly out of this one — Maximum Overdrive, Graveyard Shift, Children of the Corn and more. My faves are the duet of “Jerusalem’s Lot” and “One for the Road,” both of with extend the story of ‘Salem’s Lot.

Cover art is by Don Brautigam. I love it, though I doesn’t vibe right with King’s work for me. YMMV.
