The Sorcerers’ Enclave

This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we check out The Sorcerers’ Enclave, a cool narrative art book by Aaron Howdle that mixes the intricate maximalism of finding books and cut-aways with the aesthetics of early Warhammer and other dark fantasy staples. Is it an RPG book? It isn’t not an RPG book! More like this, please.

  1. Thanks to Stu for “Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground”! It took me back to my early RPG days (high school circa 1980) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I also enjoy your podcast. The Sorcerer’s Enclave, once I looked it up on the web, reminds me of Anna Blackwell’s “Delve”, in that it’s a cutaway of an RPG location.

The twist is that Delve is “drawing game”, where the (solo) player draws each chamber as they dig and explore the underground with the help of charts, tables, and a standard deck of playing cards. When you finish a game you can look back over the picture you drew and remember how the story unfolded.
It’s like Sorcerer’s Enclave, but from the opposite direction. Delve generates a drawing and story as you play, while Sorcerer’s Enclave starts with the drawing which inspires a story.

    1. So glad you enjoyed my book! I loved Blackwell’s Umbra and Rise, but I somehow missed Delve! I need to find a copy. Cutaways forever!
