Hawkler (1984)

Ugh, Hawkler, the good ranger. He’s one of the last LJN D&D toys, part of the second wave and featuring “battle-matic action,” which means there is a lever in his back that will swing his arm awkwardly.

I can’t stand this figure, and I think he’s the one truly uninspired design in the line, looking more like a low-rent GI Joe than a D&D toy. The base figure has some terrible fashion choices — high boots, thigh straps, weird green shorts, fingerless gloves and a headband. He seems ready for an aerobics class, which is sort of like running around the woods, I guess? What he lacks in good taste in clothes, he makes up for with far too many accessories — bandoleer, dagger (which fits in a slot in the bandoleer, a nice design choice), a quiver of arrows, a bow and a hawk that can clip on to his falconry glove.

All these bits make finding a complete Hawkler extremely difficult. The damn hawk was the hardest for me — I finally found one in a weird eBay-like site exclusive to the Philippines and had to cajole the seller into shipping the thing internationally via Fedex, an experience I chalk up to being one of the stupidest I have indulged in. For Hawkler. God.
