Hexcrawl Toolbox (2023)

Oh hey, another box! This is the Hexcrawl Toolbox (2023), from Games Omnivorous. It follows two other hex tile products in the Hex World line that are worth checking out — Undying Sands and Bottled Sea.

What’s in the box? 150 hexes, split across eight biomes (pastoral, desert, ocean, forest, jungle, swamp, mountains, steppes), each with a “blank” side and a side featuring a unique point of interest or terrain. There are also wooden tokens — one for the party, seven for treasures and a bunch of blue sticks for rivers (you can lay them in-between the tiles). There are four postcard adventures with pre-configured hex layouts, a pamphlet with tools for stocking dungeons, towers, cities and villages, and a bag for blind drawing. Finally, there is a guide book that explains all the features of the hexes, provides encounter tables and suggests methods for getting further utility out of the box.

I should mention that main draw here is the art by Kevin Cannon, which is bright, cartoonish and maintains a fascinating balance between portraying touchstones I expect while also subverting them or depicting entirely new, weird things that get me excited and generate new ideas. You need both. Too much of the former is boring, too much of the other is baffling. These are perfect. One of the absolute coolest RPG tools I’ve seen in a long time.
