Green and Pleasant Land (1987)

Green and Pleasant Land was produced under license for Call of Cthulhu by Games Workshop back in 1987. It was one of the first Call of Cthulhu sourcebooks to detail a foreign country for the 1920s (Chaosium’s own Terror Australis also came out in 1987 and the 1890’s Cthulhu by Gaslight box had only come out the year previous).

The first half of the book takes the same approach as the 1920s Sourcebook included in the early CoC rules box sets, presenting details on many aspects of British life in a digest format. You have everything from motor cars to secret societies covered, and it is a pretty good historical overview, if a bit dry.

The second half is given over to scenarios. The Horror in the Glen is a sturdy archetypal Call of Cthulhu scenario, Death in the Post is a death trap and Shadows Over Darkbank is all squandered potential. Nothing outright bad here, but nothing super memorable either. The book rounds out with a reprint of a Brian Lumley short story, which **shrug**

It is a good looking book though. Love the cover depicting the imminent demise of a cricketer. The historical photos and illustrations in the first half are nicely reproduced and go along way toward conveying a distinctly Brittish vibe. The scenarios are illustrated by a very restrained Martin McKenna (who fans of Warhammer Fantasy will be pretty familiar with). Downside: this, like many GW softcovers of the period, has a crap binding. This is my third copy and it seems impossible to prevent them from completely degenerating from book into folder of paper.
