Devils & Demons (1987)

Devils & Demons (1987), despite my love of both sorts of entities, is kind of a wash for me. There’s a great Algernon Blackwood story (“Secret Worship”) and Henry Kuttner’s amazing “Graveyard Rats,” not a lot stands out to me (well, Arthur Machen’s “Novel of the White Powder” does, but I don’t consider that terribly diabolical?). There are authors who I recognize and I am sure I read their stories here (Ray Russell, Tanith Lee), but I don’t recall them. In fairness to Kaye, however, I tend to find devil-themed anthologies a bit wanting in general.

That cover is something else, though. I like that Edward Gorey chose a garish yellow for his background, rather than the obvious red — it comes off as insidious and sickly, I think. I enjoy the frolicking demons tossing sinners about. It almost seems as though everyone is having fun (this is probably not the case). The hand-drawn lettering is fantastic, too. It isn’t my personal favorite, but it is almost certainly one of Gorey’s most striking book covers.
