Tokyo Citybook (1993)

Tokyo Citybook (1993) has an earlier catalog number than Los Angeles, but came out the following year. This one is marginally less icky seeming than its predecessor, though I generally find that the presentation of Nippon Tech across the Torg line indulges in Japanophobia stereotypes that were rampant at the time (see also Rising Sun, Back to the Future II, Blade Runner). More than anything, this one suffers from being kinda dull (you can pretty much tell if a given Torg book is good based on whether any of the art elicits a cackle and I didn’t even chuckle once here). Mirroring the real world, a lot of Torg’s Japan is concerned with corporations and financial data and I just don’t care. Maybe this makes for a compelling world of skulduggery and intrigue, but mostly I just want to tear it all down.

Robert Burger did the cover; I’m not familiar with his work. Again, I can’t help but read it in the context of Nippon Tech’s anti-Japanese tropes. But also, I kinda like it. It’s deeply strange and highly ’80s in its aesthetics and it’s kind of like visual candy for my eyes.
