Dragon5 2

Dragon Magazine #150

The cover of Dragon Magazine 150 (the 1989 Halloween issue) is graced by a delightful painting by Larry Elmore. Rather than some fantasyland, this painting depicts the magical countryside of rural Kentucky. Going to be honest: I love me a good animated scarecrow. Perms, not so much, but it was the 80s, so what are you going to do?

This art eventually wound up on the cover of David Drake’s book Old Nathan, a series of loosely connected stories about an American wizard in the vein of Manly Wade Wellman’s John the Balladeer stories. If you are into stories of strange goings on and witchcraft in the rural wilds of America, I highly recommend checking out both.
