Dorothée – “Le Sourire du Dragon” (1987)

Some fun nostalgia for you this week in the form of D&D themed 45 records for kids. First up…this single by Dorothée.

OK, my French is not good, so feel free to correct me if you know better. Best as I can tell, Dorothee was a singer and host for children’s TV shows in France. One of her shows, Club Dorothée, was a sort of before and after school variety show that included cartoons. I haven’t been able to figure out if the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon aired in France independently or only within Club Dorothée (any followers out there in France?) but “Le Sourire du Dragon” – The Smile of the Dragon – was the song for the opening credits.

And here it is, the 1987 single with a b-side called “Quand les Dragons ont Cesse de Volver” – When the Dragons Stop Flying. Gonna be honest with you – I haven’t worked up the nerve to actually throw this on the turntable. I am worried I might wince myself into some kind of coma.

The cover art is gloriously bad. Bobby the barbarian and Uni are serviceable, I guess (though Bobby’s got a bit of a Damien from The Omen stare going on). That is a weak attempt at Venger, though, and I guess that four headed dragon is supposed to be Tiamat? Eesh.

Maybe we’ll throw this on the podcast sometime so you can hear me and Hambone react to it in real time…
