Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Dioramas (1983)

Rounding out the week with another bit of 1983 D&D tie-in merchandise aimed at kids. This time, its the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Dioramas.

This is a little bit better quality overall compared to the castle from Monday. It is honestly worth it for the painted backdrops, which are fantastic. You’re meant to glue them to a series of cedar blocks, which allows them to stand slightly curved and is actually a lot cooler than the plastic frame I expected them to use.

The die-cut wooden figures are all concept illustrations by Larry Elmore and Timothy Truman for the LJN toy line, most of which appeared on the cards the figures came on, and also showed up in AC1: The Shady Dragon Inn. A number of these characters never made it to toys, including Foxfingers the thief, Figgen the halfling, Skylla the magic-user, Raven the cleric and the rarely seen Garn Grey-Gaze, the gnome illusionist.

I have a deep appreciation for how hideous the color schemes are for all the characters in the product photo on the box front. Why on earth didn’t they just color them to match the toys?
