Battle for the Golden Sun (1988)

Battle for the Golden Sun (1988) was one of the first modules for the West End Games Star Wars RPG. Just bask in that cover for a minute, would you?

It basically tells you all you need to know. Players have to explore a water world populated with sea lion centaur aliens who are fighting the Empire. OK, not everything you need to know: the planet apparently has a super weapon of some kind on it, the titular golden sun, and everyone is looking for it. The golden sun turns out to be a colony of force-sensitive coral. There are AT-ATs that swim. I expect you to use your best jokes in the comments, gang.

Golden Sun combines two things I love dearly. On the one hand, it is an RPG product that has no idea what it is doing. It is flailing around, simultaneously trying SO HARD to be good while at the same time totally phoning it in. It reads like a D&D module. It is basically the Star Wars RPG trying to figure itself out in full view of the public. On the other hand, this is pretty bad Star Wars. Not nitpicky bad Star Wars, like “DarkStyder was too Star Treky,” but truly not good Star Wars, like the Christmas Special. I think that, as the franchise takes itself more and more seriously, crappy Star Wars is becoming my favorite Star  Wars.

Surprising thing: that interior art is all Jeff Dee, of early D&D fame. Another reason to love this deeply silly scenario.
