DL6: Dragons of Ice (1985)

Let’s continue through the Dragonlance modules for a spell, eh? This is DL6: Dragons of Ice (1985) and it marks the start of the second arc of the story after the main action of Dragons of Autumn Twilight wrapped up in its way in DL4. Much of the transition between those two arcs is accomplished here by way of what amounts to a Star Wars credits crawl.

DL6 is kind of weird because it expands on material glossed over in Dragons of Winter Night. I remember reading that book and catching the mention of the thanoi – walrus people! – and being annoyed that something so obviously awesome would be cut, so I have a soft spot for this module. Because walrus people. And also a white dragon.

Anyway, the action involves dragon army assaults on the city of Tarsis, a flight into the icy wilderness and an exploration of a fairly brief dungeon. The whole thing is punctuated by the constant hammering of plot events, but since this particular plot isn’t in the books, I think it works better than most of the modules in the series – you aren’t as smothered by the idea that there is a “correct” choice at every crossroads.

Another weird thing: only half the pre-generated characters from the first four modules are playable here – the rest return in DL10, off on a parallel adventure. So say goodbye to Raistlin for now.
