The Phylactery (2020) is an ongoing zine from Planet X, brimming with OSR stuff in true variety pack fashion. There’s a little bit of everything in here – artifacts, monsters, spells, cults, magic items, you name it, basically. Tons of great art. Perhaps of most interest are three adventuring locations – the fungus filled dungeon, a cursed island and an infested overland hexcrawl (all boasting maps by Skullfungus). They’re lean, mean locations, perfect for one-shots or to drop into your regular campaign with zero prep.

I love a book that just dumps a lot of resources for you to use right in your lap (a tradition in RPGs as old as Arduin). Everything here has that Planet X grindhouse aesthetic, but there’s a pleasantly generic vibe to the material.  I mean that in a positive way – it doesn’t feel like it belongs to something else, so it is less work to put your grubby fingerprints all over it and make it your own. More stuff like this, please.
