OK, so, Warhammer 40,000: Compendium (1989) is more in line with what I think of when I think of a 40k book. Army lists, painting guides, lore galore.

There is a lot of space dedicated to things in here that I am pretty sure got phased out soon after. Squats, or space dwarves, for one. I guess Harlequins are still in the game, but I doubt they look quite like this anymore. The harlequins, for me, represent such a bizarre choice that simultaneously makes perfect aesthetic sense for the UK circa 1989. So bright, so punk, so weird. I can’t help but wonder if they partly inspired stuff like, well, Harlequin from Shadowrun or some of the aesthetic choices of Changeling. I feel like Warhammer is very much caught up in the UK comic scene at this point in time, and that scene definitely influences Changeling; I’d be interested to learn if Warhammer aesthetics gave as much as they took.
