AC3: The Kidnapping of Princess Arelina (1984)

Somewhat in line with Dungeon Geomorphs, AC3: The Kidnapping of Princess Arelina (1984), was another foray into papercraft dungeon-making. It’s mainly notable for introducing “Dragon Tiles,” full color, heavy cardboard tiles that can be laid on a dungeon grid to depict furniture or other notable features. These were accompanied by fold-up walls on a lighter cardstock that would lead to products like the Falcon scenarios we looked at last month. There are also some monster and character standees.

All of this is pretty new and exciting! MERP and GURPS wouldn’t get their (rather well-loved) standees until 1986 and 1987 respectively. Meanwhile, you have TSR cranking out stuff like AC3, Marvel Super Heroes and the shitty Indiana Jones RPG, all with top-of-the-line color cardboard doo-hickies. This is what the big dog in the hobby is supposed to do. I wish they did more of it instead of being cruel to their staff and suing everyone they didn’t like.

As you might expect, the adventure is pretty forgettable. A direct sequel came out the following year with some wilderness tiles. Its scenario is also pretty crap.
