EX2: Land Beyond the Magic Mirror (1983)

EX2: Land Beyond the Magic Mirror (1983) is the natural companion to Dungeonland, translating Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland sequel Through the Looking-Glass (1871) into D&D terms. Despite adapting the more interesting of the two books, this mod is somehow more underwhelming than Dungeonland, with which it directly connects at certain points. There is a giant magic chessboard encounter, which is fairly mediocre by giant chessboard encounter standards. There is a house of mirrors which is pretty good. Bizarrely, Gygax totally misuses the Jabberwocky, one of the weirdest and coolest monsters to emerge from literature. It’s just a big dumb pile of hit points AND THE MODULE DOESN’T REQUIRE THE PARTY USE A VORPAL BLADE TO KILL IT. This is a travesty.

It does, however, have the scariest piece of James Holloway art ever created. Rendering that ghost in a different style from the rest of the illustration really makes it an order of magnitude creepier. I hate it (in the good way).
