M1: Blizzard Pass (1983)

This is M1: Blizzard Pass (1983). It is a novelty solo adventure for…it just occurs to me that I have no idea what the M stands for. I had just assumed it was for the Master Rules (something reinforced by the fact that the M-series in 1986 was for the Master rules, after which point this and Maze of the Riddling Minotaur were referred to as MSOLOs), but they are still a couple years off. M for Magic? M for Maze? I dunno.

Anyway, that little missing piece of the cover used to have a little black square of velcro on it that was used to attach a magic marker pen (M for Marker?), used to reveal the passages in the book that were printed in “invisible ink.” Pens fell out of the shrinkwrap, or were stolen. They ran out of ink. I don’t have a pen. Apparently, the printed ink stops responding to the marker after a period of time anyway, so I probably wouldn’t be able to play even if I did have a pen. I wouldn’t, though. This is an asinine gimmick.

So yea, there you go. Tim Truman’s cover is excellent, at least. There interiors are uncredited, but I at least recognize some OK Jim Holloways.

  1. Thankfully, the module has been re-released on DrivethruRPG, with the invisible ink sections filled in. Still doesn’t help the poor saps who spent money on original copies, but at least it makes the module playable.
