DLS3: Oak Lords (1991) turn the focus on the Qualinesti, Dragonlance’s average elves. Again, Brom delivers the cover and again, the vibes are not very Dragonlance. As with Tree Lords, the over-all feel I get is one of Celtic faeries rather than typical fantasy elves. There’s a bit of that in the cover. There’s a lot more inside with the idea of hidden elven complexes and buried evils.

Weirdly, this module returns to the DL-series format, with pre-generated characters from the novels on tap for this, with Porthios and Gilthanas returning to Qualinost after the War of the Lance with the hope of re-establishing the nation. I like the attempt at tying up loose ends, but I’m pretty sure the attention to canon here is lacking, as a character who I know goes on to live through many more novels dies here. Which is rich, considering the DL-series modules were too cowardly to force the death of Sturm, arguably the event the whole damn trilogy turns on.
Anyway, there is an undead beast, which is one of my favorite Dragonlance monsters, and apparently a lizard-riding death knight? Its weird. But not really in the good way that Tree Lords is — these elves are boring, just like most elves. More Terry Dykstra art, though, which is never a bad thing!
