DLS4: Wild Elves (1991)

DLS4: Wild Elves (1991) is insane. It is kind of hard to believe the series escalates to this within just a few months. And culminates. This is the last one. For good reason, probably.

So, during the War of the Lance, the other elves had external problems — the Silvanesti were corrupted by the dreams of their king, the Qualinesti were driven from their homes by rampaging Dragon Armies. The Kargonesti, the titular wild elves? They were invaded and subjugated by refugee Silvanesti and Qualinesti. What a bunch of assholes. This module is about rising up against their oppressors and leading the Kagonesti to a fabled promised land.

But that’s not all! Oh no, it is not. There is a big problem in that the promised valley sits above what is, to my understanding, the only underdark in Krynn. Which here is called the Deathdark (edgy!) and is populated not only by drow (who had up to this point not existed on Krynn — there are Dark Elves, but they are philosophical exiles like Dalamar, the evil sorcerer, who is just an unusually nasty and handsome regular elf) but a number of terrifying and/or hilarious monster/spider hybrids, like the spider horse and the spider dragon and the six-armed composite elf warriors called curotai.

I really want to tell you that this is just stupid, but I kind of like it. This is, I think, partly because Karl Waller is the interior artist and he does his damnedest to turn something idiotic like Spider Plus Horse into something horrible that will live in your nightmares for decades. I had this as a kid, and lost it, and recently got it again and I surprised myself by how willing I was to consider running this based on Waller’s art alone. Brom’s cover is perfectly OK, but to me the least interesting of the three. It was generic enough, though, to be reused by TSR at least twice for completely unrelated products (I think one of them is a Dark Sun novel, which is weird considering all the lush greenery, but whatever).
