Dragon’s Hall (1981)

Dragon’s Hall (1981) is a sequel of sorts to Survival of the Fittest (I covered that one a couple months ago) and is intended as, well, I’m not sure. The cover says it is a solitaire dungeon, but the introduction recommends a party rather than a single character, so I guess the idea is for one person playing multiple characters to run through the module. I suppose several players could do so without a GM as well, but that also feels like a traffic jam waiting to happen. Amusingly, the adventure can end in several places in a Choose Your Own Adventure-style “You are dead,” despite the fact that you might be running multiple characters. It isn’t great.

At any rate, language about using the dungeon as an unwanted PC disposal device (as in Survival of the Fittest) is gone, though the author does emphasize the danger of the place. Which is fair because, well, it’s in the title: this is a dragon’s lair. Therein lies the novelty: the dungeon is tuned for characters of level 1 and 2, so the the idea isn’t to kill the dragon, you’re just meant to sneak in and steal his prized treasure. I like this! I don’t like stuff like this though: “The noise awakens the dragon, who kills you. If there is more than one in the party, roll a 6-sided die and the dragon only kills the one(s) with the highest roll. The rest of you escape…sadly, the one who died was carried the box, so it was lost.” That is some annoying railroading!

Lots of super bright, weirdly colored art throughout. I love a lot of this stuff. Future Palladium founder Kevin Siembieda is well represented.
